Northwest ISD Leverages x2VOL to streamline service hour tracking and engage students in personal development

Northwest ISD (NISD), located in North Texas, has built a strong culture around community service, driven by its district vision to empower learners and leaders to positively impact the world. To effectively track student service and support character development at scale, NISD adopted x2VOL in 2017. Since implementing the platform, the district has seen greater data consistency, improved administrative efficiency, and deeper student engagement in community service.

About Their Program:

"Northwest ISD empowers learners and leaders to positively impact the world." This district vision is embedded into the student experience at Northwest ISD. From middle school through high school, students engage in meaningful service that shapes character, leadership, and empathy.

NISD uses x2VOL to track and manage service hours across a range of clubs and initiatives including National Honor Society (NHS), Green Cord, The Big Event, Delta Positive, and “Just Serve” - a new student-led group promoting volunteerism. Even middle schools participate through programs like the Silver Star Award, recognizing younger students’ commitment to service.

The Challenge: District Graphic for NISD Case Study

Before adopting x2VOL, NISD struggled with fragmented and inefficient service hour tracking processes that varied by campus and club. The main issues included:

  • Inconsistent tracking and reporting across campuses

  • Inequitable access to service opportunities for students

  • Significant administrative burden for staff managing service logs in spreadsheets

District-wide reporting was nearly impossible, and students lacked a unified platform to reflect on or set goals for their service. Staff were utilizing excel sheets to track students' submitted service hours, however, there were inconsistencies across campuses and educators struggled to engage students in service in a meaningful way.

The Benefits of x2VOL:

The Benefits of x2VOL-1

x2VOL brought an immediate shift in how NISD manages and promotes student service. Students were empowered to track their service hours, write reflections, and have ownership over their service history. Educators were able to easily create goals, establish requirements, and see student progress toward those goals. District leaders were able to have consistent data from campuses across the district to see the full district impact of service.

To break it down, there were a number of improvements from the top of the district down to the individual student:

  • Unified platform across campuses for all service initiatives

  • Equitable access for service opportunities for students
  • Streamlined approval and verification processes

  • Easy access to reports in order to recognize students who have accomplished service goals
  • Accessible tools for students to track progress and leverage experiences

  • Reflection feature for students to understand the impact of their work
  • Centralized district data to showcase impact

"As a CTO, I'm always looking for tools that simplify processes and make life easier for our campuses - and x2VOL has done exactly that."
- Cara Carter, Chief Technology Officer, Northwest ISD

Streamlined service tracking and consistency across campuses have made a huge impact at NISD, specifically for students and teachers at Byron Nelson High School. Melissa Granger, the National Honor Society leader noted the importance of consistency for students to transition their service tracking processes from middle school to high school...

"Students coming from the middle schools already know how to use x2VOL and that is a big advantage." - Melissa Granger, NHS Advisor, Byron Nelson High School

The Impact:

Data and Oversight:

  • The district now has clear visibility into student community engagement and service impact

  • Ability to generate reports for stakeholders with ease and engage the district in impactful service opportunities

Efficiency in Tracking:

  • Major time savings for teachers and club sponsors who previously used Excel or Google Sheets

  • Simplified management of multiple service programs (e.g., NHS, Green Cord, Just Serve)

"In education, time is precious. x2VOL has allowed us to focus less on managing spreadsheets and more on supporting students and schools."
- Cara Carter, Chief Technology Officer, Northwest ISD

Student Growth & Engagement:

  • Students have ownership over their experiences and are responsible for entering and managing their hours to meet goals

  • x2VOL's reflection feature means students are more aware of their own development and the broader impact of their service

x2VOL's unique reflection feature ensures students have the ability to pause and process their experiences and recognize the impact they had in their community and the impact it had on them personally.

"I read every single reflection. I read every single one."
- Jenny Jantz, Green Cord Advisor, Byron Nelson High School

A Success Story:A Success Story

One senior, after participating at a local mobile food bank, discovered a deep passion for helping others and continued that mission into college leading similar efforts on their campus. Events like a Senior Citizens Dance that students host and The Big Event (a district-wide service day) connect students with diverse community members, fostering empathy and leadership. Giving students opportunities to engage with groups of people different than them, expands their world view and gives them experiences that set them up for success for college and beyond.

Every service initiative, big or small, is tied back to the goal of helping students see themselves as part of the solution in their communities.

Looking Ahead:Looking Ahead

As NISD continues to focus on graduation pathways, social-emotional learning, and college & career readiness, x2VOL will remain a foundational tool. As leaders further encourage student entrenchment and engagement in community service, x2VOL will continue to be a resource to empower students, educators, and district leaders to have a successful and impactful service initiative.

Northwest ISD’s culture of service is thriving, and with x2VOL, they’re building a generation of students who are engaged in their communities and growing through their experiences.

"One of the best parts of x2VOL is that it just works. Since implementation, it's required minimal technical support, which speaks to its reliability."
- Cara Carter, Chief Technology Officer, Northwest ISD
