In a World Dominated by AI, Student Experiences Matter More Than Ever

Artificial intelligence is everywhere.

Every day, students are surrounded by conversations about AI, how it will change education, eliminate jobs, create new ones, and more. AI can answer questions in seconds, summarize books, write computer code, explain difficult concepts, and provide access to an almost unlimited amount of information.

For today's high school students, access to information is no longer the challenge it once was. The bigger challenge is turning information into understanding. And that requires something AI cannot provide: experience.

AI Can Tell You About the World. It Can't Experience It for You.

A student can ask AI what it is like to volunteer at a food bank. AI can explain food insecurity, describe how food banks operate, and even help the student understand the economic conditions that cause families to need assistance.
But AI cannot recreate the experience of handing groceries to a parent who needs them.

AI can explain leadership. It can provide ten characteristics of great leaders, summarize hundreds of leadership books, and create a step-by-step guide for leading a team.
But it cannot give a teenager the experience of organizing a group of volunteers, making decisions under pressure, and realizing that leadership is much harder (and much more human) than a list of principles suggests.

There is an enormous difference between knowing something and experiencing something.

The Classroom Is Only One Place Where Learning Happens

For generations, we have associated education primarily with classrooms, textbooks, assignments, and exams.

Those things remain important, but some of the most meaningful learning in a young person's life happens outside of the classroom through service in their communities, internships, part-time jobs, and more. Experiences that can’t be replicated in the classroom or downloaded from AI. 

Students experience responsibility, frustration, empathy, teamwork, uncertainty, failure, accomplishment, and purpose. Those aren't pieces of information. They are experiences that help shape who a young person becomes.

Experience Is a Differentiator

AI dramatically reduces the cost of accessing knowledge. But when everyone has access to powerful AI tools, simply having access to information becomes less distinctive, and experiences become more valuable.

For example:
Imagine two students who are interested in healthcare. Both can use AI to learn about healthcare careers. Both can research medical terminology, explore college majors, and understand different professions. But one student has also volunteered at a hospital, interacted with patients, watched healthcare professionals work together, and discovered how they personally respond to that environment.

That student has something AI cannot generate: context grounded in lived experience.

They don't simply know more about healthcare. They know more about themselves. And that may be one of the most important outcomes of experiential learning.

Experience Helps Students Discover Who They Are

High school students are constantly asked an enormous question:

What do you want to do with your life?

We often expect them to answer it through information. Research careers. Compare colleges. Look at salaries. Choose a major. AI will make that research dramatically easier. But students rarely discover what matters to them simply by reading about possibilities.

Students discover their passions and meaning by doing things.

• A student volunteers with children and realizes they love teaching

• Another works on an environmental project and discovers an interest in sustainability

• Someone helps organize a fundraiser and realizes they enjoy marketing

• Another volunteers at a hospital and discovers that healthcare isn't actually the career they imagined

Even discovering what you don't want to do is valuable. Experience turns abstract possibilities into personal understanding.

Experiences Teach Employability Skills

Additionally, many of the capabilities employers increasingly value are deeply human. Communication. Initiative. Judgment. Empathy. Collaboration. Adaptability. Leadership. Reliability. Problem solving.

Students don't develop these qualities by reading definitions of them. They develop by practicing them. 

Students learn:

• Reliability when someone is depending on you to show up

• Teamwork when your success depends on other people

• Empathy when you encounter someone whose life is very different from yours

• Resilience when something doesn't work and you have to try again

• Confidence when you accomplish something you weren't sure you could do

If Experiences Matter, We Need to Capture Them

There is a challenge, however. Much of the learning students gain outside the classroom can easily disappear.

A student may spend hundreds of hours serving their community, and years later, all that remains might be a number on a spreadsheet or a line on a college application. The real value was never just the hours.

It was what happened during those hours.

• What did the student do?

• Who did they serve?

• What responsibility did they take on?

• What did they learn?

• How did the experience change them?

• What skills did they develop along the way?
