Top Community Service Scholarships of 2024

Going off to college or university is an exciting time for students! As a student, you’ve worked hard to get good grades, participate in extracurriculars, and be an involved member of your community. 

Did you know, you can use those service and volunteer hours to help pay for college? Students who are involved in community service can explore service scholarships that reward volunteerism. If you’re a student, we encourage you to check out the volunteer-centric scholarship opportunities below. If you’re a school administrator or family member of a high school student, please share the opportunities and encourage them to apply!

  1. National Honor Society Scholarship Program
    If you are an active member and in good standing with your school’s NHS chapter, this scholarship is for you! This year, the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) is awarding $2 million in scholarships to 600 students. According to their website, scholarship recipients are selected based on their demonstration of the four pillars of NHS: Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character. Applications open on September 16, 2024 and close November 26, 2024.
  2. Equitable Excellence Scholarship
    Seniors who demonstrate ambition and show a passion to be a force for good in school and their community, are perfect candidates for the Equitable Excellence Scholarship Program! On their website, Equitable states that they will award 100 $5,000 annual scholarships renewed each year for four years, for $20,000 per recipient; as well as award 100 one-time $2,500 scholarships to help students with education expenses like books or room and board. Applications open October 2024.
  3. Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes
    In honor of an outstanding woman who devoted more than 20 years of her life to working at the Colorado School for the Blind, the Gloria Barron Scholarship for Young Heroes is granted to 25 inspiring public-spirited young leaders between the ages of 8 and 18 who have made a significant positive difference to their communities and environment, will receive a $10,000 scholarship. According to their website, applicants must be currently working on a service project or have done so within the past 12 months. Applications open in January 2025.
  4. GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarship Program
    This program is looking for high school seniors (students on U.S Armed Forces bases or home-schooled are also eligible) who demonstrate leadership, integrity, drive, and citizenship within their communities and schools. Students must also have a minimum 3.0 GPA. Their website states recipients will earn a $10,000 renewable scholarship - up to $40,000 total - for tuition, school fees, books, supplies, and on-campus room and board. Sign up on their website to be notified when the 2025 application opens.
  5. DoSomething.org Volunteer Scholarships
    Take action with DoSomething.org to make social change! By signing up for one of their featured campaigns, you’ll not only be doing good, but you could even win a scholarship! You can enter multiple scholarships, complete all the required steps of the campaigns, and then submit and share your reflection!
