Summer break gives students a chance to step away from their studies and enjoy more freedom in how they spend their time. It’s also a wonderful opportunity to stay active while giving back to the community through service. For students who have required service hours upcoming in the next school year, utilize this time to get a head start on your service hours! Not sure how to get involved or where to start? Here is a list of service opportunities for inspiration:
1. Summer Camp
Are you passionate about a certain sport or hobby? You can find summer camps in your state for specific interests, and apply to be a camp counselor, volunteer, etc. Find a summer camp that matches your interests and hobbies like:
- Sports Camps
- Band Camps
- Theatre Camps
- Art Camps
2. Habitat for Humanity
Habitat for Humanity offers many opportunities for high-school students to get involved in community service during the summer. The types of opportunities available can include:
- Building houses
- Pricing recycled items in their ReStore
- Participating in neighborhood cleanups.
Visit the Habitat for Humanity website for more information about how you can get involved with their organization!
3. Serve Your Neighbors
During the summer, your neighbors may have small projects, yard work, or miscellaneous tasks on their to-do lists. Many neighborhoods use communication platforms like Facebook, Nextdoor, or Ring to share neighborhood updates and connect with residents. If your neighborhood has a preferred platform, consider posting an announcement offering your help with projects, chores, or other tasks around the neighborhood. Before posting, make sure you to verify with your Parents/Guardians that you are using the correct communication channel for your neighborhood.
If your neighborhood does not use an online platform, there are still plenty of ways to spread the word. You can create flyers to post around the neighborhood or go door-to-door to introduce yourself and offer your help in person.
4. Get Involved with Your Church
Are you a member of a church or know of a church in your community that could use volunteers? Churches offer volunteer opportunities year-round, with events and activities often ramping up during the summer-time. Reach out to your local church or visit their website to find volunteer opportunities, such as serving as a greeter, setting up and operating events, and helping with administrative tasks.
5. Volunteer for Your Future
If you have a career path in mind, look for volunteer opportunities that align with your goals! A few examples of this would be:
- Volunteering at a hospital (for future healthcare professionals)
- Volunteering at an animal shelter (for aspiring veterinarians or zoologists)
- Volunteering at the library (for those interested in education or public service)
- Volunteering at a STEM camp (perfect for those pursuing science or tech careers)
- Supporting a local nonprofit by creating social media graphics or handling office duties (for students interested in business, graphic design and marketing)
6. Help Your Local Charities
Charities often rely on volunteers to operate their events, fundraisers, and facilities. Research local Charities in your community, and discover what volunteer opportunities they might offer on their websites. You can also create your own donation drive to support your chosen Charity's mission, while raising awareness and support within your community. Here are a few well-known Charities that often have volunteer opportunities:
- American Red Cross
- AmeriCorps
- Feed My Starving Children
- Volunteers of America
- Meals on Wheels America
7. Start Your Own Fundraiser
Over the summer, start a fundraiser for a cause that you are passionate about! You can also create a fundraiser based on the needs of your unique community. Here are a few examples of fundraisers that you can organize:
- Back to School Supplies Donation
- Fun Run/Walk-a-thon
- Bake Sale
- Used Book Sale
- Community Car Wash
8. Local Clean Up Projects
While you're spending more time outdoors during the summer, keep your community beautiful by taking part in local clean up projects. Cleaning parks, planting trees, and picking up trash are just a few examples of ways you can make a difference in your community.
9. Create Your Own Project
Get creative! If you have an idea or something that you are passionate about that can go together with service, take charge by organizing the project!
- Identify the issue
- Do your research
- Make sure to receive approval's where it's needed
Summer is a great opportunity to stay active within the community while giving students the ability to fulfill their service hours using their additional free time while school is not in session. Remember, you don't have to serve alone! Encourage your friends and family to serve with you this summer to increase your impact! Volunteering with your loved ones is not only a meaningful way to strengthen your bond, but it also gives you an opportunity to work together to create a positive impact in your community.
Don't Forget to Reflect!
Once you are finished serving, make sure to write a reflection in your x2VOL account! Reflection plays a huge role in your development as a student. You can learn a lot about yourself and others while serving. Write about what you did, how it made you feel and what you learned about your community or the people you served!
